School Council 2019

Inspired by Greta Thunberg the thirteen-year-old from Sweden the children and staff have decided that the focus this year for the School Council will be the United Nations Global Goal: ‘Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.’

Climate change is now affecting every country on every continent. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, weather events are becoming more extreme and greenhouse gas emissions are now at their highest levels in history. It is disrupting national economies and affecting lives, costing people, communities and countries dearly today and even more tomorrow.  Climate change, is a global challenge and one that requires solutions and action.

The School Council members were all elected democratically by their class member after delivering a speech about why protecting the environment is important to them and suggested ways that we could make a difference. They are all passionate ambassadors and will be helping to educate the school about what climate change is, how it is effecting the world and what we can do about it here at Welton St Mary’s and at home.

The children will be working closely with West Lindsey’s climate control and environmental officer to audit our current strengths and identify areas we need to work on to ensure we make a positive change.  They shall also work with the Parish Council and other local schools to help improve the local environment.

As well as helping our school become greener, we shall continue to develop the outdoor classroom and have plans to create a ‘Dig for Victory’ area with an Anderson Shelter and  greenhouse made out of plastic bottles.

The School Council wanted to create some artwork from things that are thrown away every day. As a result of collecting plastic bottle tops from families, the community and local businesses, we created these stunning pieces of artwork.

Thank you to Jim Blainey from Dunholme Camera Club who came in to take some photographs.
