This year we decided to focus on “freedom” to commemorate Remembrance Day. In collective worship, KS2 children reflected on the stories of various advocates for freedom from the past and present, and then in classes, went on to write what freedom meant for them individually and collectively. Collective Worship Council then made a brick wall display with the freedom quotes written on A5 paper with the word “freedom” as if breaking through the oppressive wall. They then decided that to really show the power of light or freedom, over darkness, the quotes on the brick wall needed to be read with a torch light to show the importance of light that brings freedom, inspired by the verse in Isaiah 9

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned

On Remembrance Day morning, parents were invited to time of quiet reflection to read through the quotes and perhaps light a candle in remembrance of those who fought for our freedom, justice and peace.
