WELTON ST MARY’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY ACADEMY SCHOOL DRIVE, WELTON, LINCOLN, LN2 3LA
CHAIR OF TRUSTEES FULL TERM OF OFFICE: 4 YEARS (Part Time. Fixed Term)
START DATE: MARCH 2025
ROLE OVERVIEW ‘Together we care, learn and thrive.’ We are seeking to appoint a dedicated and committed Chair of Trustees to support, lead and drive our successful academy in the coming years.
Welton St Mary’s Church of England Primary Academy became an academy in January 2013 and remains a Single Academy Trust. There are currently 395 children on roll. Welton St Mary’s is a successful Church of England Primary Academy with a good Ofsted grading in July 2013 which has been continued in the short inspections of January 2017 and January 2021. Our SIAMS outcome was Outstanding in 2016 and, in 2024, the findings were that Welton St Mary’s Church of England Primary Academy is ‘living up to its foundations as a church school’. The Headteacher has been in post since September 2011. We run a committee system of governance and the Board comprises of nine trustees.
The current Chair of Trustees has been a trustee for 8 years and in the role of Chair of Trustees for 2 years and is now looking to step down. We are therefore looking for our next Chair to lead the Board of Trustees and to work with the Company Members, the Senior Leadership Team and our school community to maintain and develop the work of our academy.
The new Chair will pay high regard to our academy vision, build a strong professional relationship with the Headteacher, providing both support and challenge, and maintain regular formal and informal communication as required. They will need to have experience of governance and board leadership or be ready to take the next step on governance. Experience in the educational context would be advantageous as would experience of working within an Academy structure and a church school as a trustee. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator, good team player and have strong inter-personal, time-management and chairing skills. They will also need to demonstrate good ability with different on-line platforms and means of electronic communication.
The time commitment is expected to be around two to three days a month but in some months may exceed this. The new Chair will be involved in regular meetings of the Trustees, the Chair’s Steering group and possibly one of the Board’s sub-committees. All main meetings are clerked by a governance professional. The Chair will also be part of the committee for the annual appraisal of the Headteacher.
Training and continuous professional development for all trustees is provided through the National Governance Association (Virtual College), Lincolnshire Governor Support and the Diocese of Lincoln.
We welcome applications from interested parties of all backgrounds. All applicants will be subject to the necessary DBS checks required by the academy plus the additional checks required by the Secretary of State for Education for all Chairs of Academy Trusts.
If you would like to arrange an informal conversation with the Headteacher, please email the Clerk to Governors imogen.lemon@welton-st-marys.lincs.sch.uk
To apply, please send a CV and covering letter setting out how your experience, knowledge and skills meet the requirements of the role to imogen.lemon@welton-st-marys.lincs.sch.uk
Application Deadline: Thursday 27th February 2025 Interviews: To be arranged at a mutually convenient time / date
